Mapping the road ahead
Hello, and welcome to issue 2.1 of Avanade Advisor. For those of you who are
new to the Advisor, the intent is to provide readers with news, tips, and
insight into Microsoft enterprise technology and how it is being put to use at
organizations around the world.
I regularly meet with Avanade customers around the world to discuss their IT
issues and concerns. For the last couple of years, the common theme in these
discussions has been a pressure to reduce costs through standardization and
consolidation.
Lately, however, I am hearing another theme from IT leaders: an increased
interest and urgency to "catch up" with the demands of the business. The
initiatives they are undertaking have become less about cost-cutting and more
about achieving true flexibility and adaptability in their IT applications and
infrastructure. In doing so, these future-oriented organizations will be able
to achieve both objectives - responding to the needs of the business while also
lowering cost.
In fact, the future is a consistent theme in the articles in this issue. We
start by shining the spotlight on the emerging topic of service-oriented
architectures (SOAs) and two of our customers - EMI and Fidelity Information
Services - that are using SOAs and the Avanade Connected Architecture to help
them more rapidly adapt to changing business requirements.
Two of our systems engineers spend some time discussing the future of Microsoft
Exchange and what you can do to ensure your organization has the flexibility to
incorporate the rapid advances in communication technology.
Finally, we address the hot topic of server virtualization, and provide some
advice on what your organization should be doing now in order to take advantage
of this emerging trend.
In between catching up on these (and, I'm sure, many other) IT topics, I hope
you also have time to catch up with family and friends this holiday season.
Thank you for your interest and your business this year - I look forward to
seeing you in 2005!
Happy Holidays,

Adam Warby
